Assessing Dyslexia toolkit
Following additional funding awarded by the Scottish Government in November 2011, the Working Group led by Dr. Margaret Crombie, is extending the Toolkit to help teachers to support pupils with dyslexia. The new Toolkit will be launched in September 2012.
We have therefore just launched a competition for all teachers to help us to improve the Toolkit by adding resources that have helped you to support pupils with dyslexia. The competition closing date is 29th June 2012.
Please help us by entering this competition - you could win an i-pad or a Kindle - and also completing an online survey about the existing Toolkit.

What is the Toolkit and how has it been disseminated so far?
The 'Assessing Dyslexia' toolkit developed by Dyslexia Scotland's working group in 2010, was endorsed by Mike Russell, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning in March 2011.
In a letter to all Directors of Education in Scotland, Mr. Russell emphasised how important it was for teachers to use the Toolkit in order to provide pupils with the support they need. He encouraged all schools in all local authorities to make full use of the free online Toolkit.

Our Dyslexia Assessment Working Group, chaired by Dr. Margaret Crombie, developed the online toolkit for teachers and early years workers to use to assess literacy difficulties and dyslexia.
The toolkit is funded by the Scottish Government and was formally launched by our President, Sir Jackie Stewart, and Mike Russell, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning on 1st June 2010.
In November 2011, further funding was announced by the Cabinet Secretary to extend the toolkit so that teachers would be able to support pupils once they have been identified with dyslexia. The existing toolkit is currently being updated to become the 'Addressing Dyslexia toolkit and this will be ready by September 2012.
The speakers at the 2010 launch were filmed for inclusion on this website.
The filmed presentations are useful for anyone wishing to find out more about the toolkit – including the background to the toolkit development, the reasons why the toolkit is so important; how to use the toolkit and what HMIE’s expectations are from schools in supporting learners with additional support needs.
These film clips can easily be incorporated into CPD sessions in schools and local authorities about the toolkit, as well as used by individual teachers and parents.
